Your Google Business Profile description has a 750-character limit. Most businesses use that space to write something like: "ABC Plumbing is a family-owned business serving the [city] area since 2005. We offer a full range of plumbing services and are committed to customer satisfaction. Call us today for a free estimate." That's not a description. That's a placeholder. It tells Google almost nothing useful and gives a potential customer no reason to choose you over the three other businesses in the map pack.

What a GBP Description Actually Does

Google reads your GBP description as an entity signal. It's looking for confirmation of what your business does, where you do it, and what makes you relevant to the searches it's trying to match you to. Your description needs to include your primary keyword, reference your key services, reinforce your service area, and include something that differentiates you.

At the same time, real people read your description too. Not many — most of them are looking at your photos and your reviews — but the ones who read it are usually the ones comparing you carefully to a competitor. Those are high-intent prospects. The description is their last read before they decide.

750 Characters Is Enough If You Use Them Right

Opening line that targets the primary keyword and establishes the business type and location immediately. Middle section that covers two or three primary services with specific language, reinforces the service area, and introduces one real differentiator — something true, not "committed to excellence." Closing line with a soft call to action and a secondary trust element.

That's the whole description. No padding. No filler. Every character doing a specific job.
